Groupon May be a Victim of Inflated Expectations

grouponMany years ago, a venture capitalist named Stewart Alsop went public with his view that Facebook should not have accepted an investment from Microsoft based on a valuation of $15 billion. More particularly, how they should have avoided that information being leaked to the public. The argument then was that Facebook could either go public or be purchased for a lesser figure. This would make the company appear as though it were declining.

Obviously, he was wrong in his assessment of Facebook, but the lesson may be taking shape at Groupon. Where it was first reported is unclear, but it is suggested that Groupon is looking for a post-IPO value in excess of $25 billion. This can be deduced just by checking the SEC documents, so this was obviously leaked by someone at Groupon or a person who met with their executives.

Regardless of all their issues, including their problems with the SEC, Groupon has become a revenue-producing beast, and they will certainly be pricing an IPO before the end of the year. Unfortunately, anything below that $25 billion mark will now be viewed as a failure or a loss of momentum. Sadly, no one seems to have learned from past mistakes.

Fisker Engines will be Supplied by BMW

fiskerBMW has announced that they will be supplying the engine for the new Fisker vehicle. Fisker Automotive confirmed this news, and says that BMW will also be supplying a few other components for their “Project Nina” vehicle.

BMW has made a hefty commitment to Fisker, promising to provide 100,000 four-cylinder engines each year for Fisker, and every engine will be turbocharged as well.

The Fisker model is yet to be named and is tentatively scheduled to hit the sales floor in the United States in 2013. It will begin being produced at a Delaware ex-GM plant in 2012.

“Project Nina” is being hailed as the sequel plug-in hybrid to Fisker’s Karma model, which is a four-door plug-in hybrid performance car.

Fisker anticipates the price tag being in the $39,000 area.

Fisker received loans from the U.S. Government to the tune of near $530 million in 2009 to create this new model in the United States. The company says it will result in the creation of over 5,000 new jobs.

Hyundai’s Hope on Wheels Tour Hits the Road

hyundaiA Hyundai Tucson recently departed on a trip from San Francisco, as it headed to Los Angeles on the initial leg of its journey. This was no family getaway though. The vehicle is scooping up handprints from children along the route as it makes stops at pediatric cancer centers. It also isn’t burning any gasoline on its ride, as it has a fuel cell stack that can convert hydrogen to electricity for its motor.

This is Hyundai’s Hope on Wheels tour and it has two objectives. One is to raise awareness for pediatric cancer, and the second is to present hospitals with grants of $100,000 to help fund research. At each stop, children stricken with cancer and those who have beaten it will add handprints to the vehicle.

This is a great cause, and the vehicle itself is a wonder.

The vehicle can hit 100-mph and this generation of Hyundai’s fuel cell stack will operate for 5,000 hours (the equivalent of 100,000 miles of driving).

Police Help Apple Track down Missing iPhone

iphoneHere is more proof that history can indeed repeat itself. The San Francisco Police Department has confirmed that they have helped Apple search for an iPhone 5 prototype that disappeared in July. The iPhone 4 was dealt a similar fate prior to its release. Don’t get too excited yet, as there is unfortunately no leaked photographic evidence of the phone.

Mere hours after completely denying any involvement in the hunt for the iPhone 5 prototype, the San Francisco P.D. decided to come clean. The department says that four plainclothes officers, accompanied by two investigators from Apple, conducted a search led by a GPS trace on the device. The officers did not enter the home as Apple’s security team searched a man’s computer and house for any evidence of the iPhone 5.

If you are like most people, you are a bit skeptical. Do you doubt which iPhone they were looking for? Well, here is some convincing evidence. The police department officially named the Word document concerning the search “iPhone5.doc.”

The only thing that is unclear now is whether Apple actually retrieved the phone. Rumors say that it may have been hawked on Craigslist for 200 bucks.

Google Decides to Trim Their Offerings

googleFollowing a steady stream of changes over the past few months, the search leader has announced they will be trimming their offerings.

In the upcoming few months, Google intends to shut down many products and merge them into other products as additional features.

This move comes after a leadership change, a social networking push and an announced major acquisition coming soon.

In particular:

  • In April, Eric Schmidt was succeeded as CEO by Larry Page, and Page made instant changes, including connecting 25% of employee bonuses to the success of Google’s social campaigns.
  • In June, Google+ was launched as a direct Facebook rival.
  • In August, Google announced that it will be acquiring mobile phone manufacturer Motorola Mobility at a cost of $12.5 billion.

Among the products being nixed are Aardvark (which they just purchased a year ago for $50 million), Google Desktop, Google Pack, Fast Flip, Google Maps API for Flash, Google Web Security, Image Labeler, Notebook, Sidewiki and Subscribed Links.
